I love Christmas! I have countless wonderful memories of the Christmas season from when I was a child. My mom got extra time off work, and we enjoyed watching lots of Christmas movies. My dad became a kid again making my world exciting and magical. It was his favorite holiday, and he and my mom sacrificed so much each year to make my Christmas memorable and special.

So as I got older and had my own kids, I was determined to make special memories with my children. I wanted that moment when, as older kids or adults, they looked back and said, “Remember when we used to….?” If I can stamp a good memory of home in my kids’ hearts and minds, I hope I have given them a precious treasure that they can take with them wherever they go.

Since this year has been crazy and super-complicated, I have become even more focused on nostalgic and simple things. Instead of looking at amazing and intricate Christmas lights, we went to the main street in our little town to look at the lights on lamp posts. Instead of sampling storebought cookies, we bought a friend’s homemade sugar cookies and decorated them ourselves! I taught the kids my Christmas recipes this year and thoroughly enjoyed savoring those comforting goodies from my past. You get the idea.

Comment below and list some of your family’s special traditions at Christmastime.

Here are a few of my favorites traditions:

  1. Make snow cream, a snowman, and have a snowball fight.
  2. Look at Christmas lights.
  3. Email Santa for your very own elves to come to your house.
  4. Make Christmas food: fudge, hot chocolate, decorate Christmas cookies.
  5. 12 Days of Christmas gift-giving
