I have been a city girl all my life, up until now. My husband grew up in a small town with woods as his backyard. When I would visit his hometown, I loved it. It was so peaceful and very different than the “big city” I was used to. Over the years, I grew more and more comfortable with the idea he would bring up occasionally about wanting some “elbow room.” At the time, we were securely nestled in a nice home on the outskirts of the city, with a large yard by city standards, with trees and a nature park close by. We had nice neighbors, and we liked it.

But then one day, my husband said he had found this house in the next county over, and it had land with it. I wasn’t sure what to expect, but when I saw the house and the land, my heart skipped a beat. I couldn’t believe it. It represented a simpler lifestyle I hadn’t even known how badly I wanted. We went to look at it as soon as we could, and it checked ALL my boxes from dreams I had when I was a little girl. It had an upstairs, a bay window, a front porch, a balcony, a long back porch, and a screened-in porch! It also had enough bedrooms and bathrooms for our kids to basically have their own wings with their own bathrooms! Other than some interesting decorating choices (a peacock bathroom and purple kitchen countertops), it was seriously my dream house. When I was little, I used to imagine reading my favorite mysteries while sitting on the window seat of a giant bay window. I also used to imagine reading my favorite mysteries while swinging on the front porch. I used to imagine reading even more mysteries while sitting on a screened-in porch in the rain. Do you see a pattern? I love to read and I love nostalgic and picturesque settings. This house had all of that, but that’s not all. It had a barn and 10.6 acres!

After working with our awesome realtor, praying hard, and searching for every dime we could find, we took the plunge! We now own a farm! As a nod to my husband’s small-town life, we named it Skyview, which is the name of the road he grew up on.

We are starting to get settled, but there is a lot of work to do, and we are ready to take it on. After the pandemic, it really became clear to us how important it is to be as self-sufficient as possible. So that is when we really started dreaming, planning, and envisioning our Farm Life.

Here are some things we are hoping to build up to:

  • Chickens
  • Ducks
  • Goats
  • Bees
  • Composting
  • A large garden
  • An orchard
  • Maybe even boarding horses!

There is a lot to do, and this is only the beginning, but please join us for the journey! Watch our first “Farm Life” series video below.
